On the Tube: Smallville (Season 10)

Smallville is currently in its tenth and final season on the CW television network. This years central story follows Clark Kent's attempt to rid himself of lingering doubts and fears in order to become the hero that he is destined to be, even as he prepares to face his biggest threat in the form of mega-powerful DC villain, Darkseid.

Of course, everyone knows that Clark eventually becomes "Superman" and although the show runners have ridiculously held fast to their initial intentions to not actually show Clark as "The Man of Steel" during the shows run, I've gotta tell you if you've been giving Smallville a pass, please come back and give it a second look. The show has been lots of fun this year and I consider it a "do not miss" on Friday nights. Trust me, that is a huge change for me. I fell by the wayside a few seasons back as the series blended too many familiar DC Comics characters into a premise that rendered the whole show into something quite "Bizarro" to me as a longtime fan of the original concepts.

The main cast has also grown much smaller, to its benefit, with only four ongoing principals this year: Tom Welling as Clark Kent, Erica Durance as Lois Lane, Cassidy Freeman as Tess Mercer and Justin Hartley as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. All four actors are knocking it out of the park weekly!

Each episode has been touching, thrilling or just outright awesome as more & more DC standbys have been tossed into the mix (Suicide Squad, various New Gods characters, plus returning favorites like Supergirl, Hawkman and there are even more promised). Even the deceased "Pa" Kent made a cameo in the season opener. Frankly, speculation about some of the earlier cast members returning for the shows final episodes, leaves me cold and I would prefer that some keep their distance. Lana Lang needed to be written out to make room for Lois, and nobody should really long for a revisitation of Clark's teenage girlfriend, since Durance & Welling have grown exceptionally comfortable in playing their classic roles of Lois & Clark.

Michael Rosenbaum made a compelling Lex Luthor in the early seasons, and the series has actually played "patty-fingers" with the Luthor character already this year; but knowing that Darkseid is on the way, leaves very little wiggle room for Lex and/or Lana to return AND to wrap things up neatly before the series finale. I just hope that the creators of this series give the fans what they've been asking for over the last decade. We deserve to see Clark as "Superman" in costume, and hopefully not just in the last thirty seconds of the final episode.
